Distribution of electricity in Pakistan is carried out by ten public sector companies (DISCOs), responsible for supply of electricity in respective areas. In addition, KE (Karachi Electric) is responsible for distribution of electricty in Karachi and its' surrounding areas. The network comprises of 11 kV feeders, power transformers (132/11 kV) and LV distribution transformers. DISCOs combine have 10,188 11kV feeders, where as KE has 1,937 11kV feeders.
Despite enough generation capacity, DISCOs carried out load-shedding on feeder level due to technical, theft and low recovery issues.
DISCOs continue to record high T&D losses owing to lack of improvement in technology and poor management. HESCO posted a highest T&D loss of 38.55% for the FY 2020-2021.
Overall sales of electric units by DISCOs and KE saw an increase of 8% for FY 2020-21. Lifting of lockdowns and targetted government pricing simulated industrial growth, which lead to increase in sales for DISCOs and KE.
